Selva,

Re: Can US residents on this thread provide a perspective on how bad this problem really is?

We are potentially turning a very important corner right now. The Bushies have decided to exacerbate the crisis by refusing any relief to the states. This is atypical of recessions for the last 60 years, when the Congress was likely to step in and do some sort of revenue sharing with cash strapped states, counties and municipalities.

The main cause for this stinginess is the ideology of vile partisans like Grover Norquist, head of a monstrous organization whose only purpose is to starve the government in order to stave off all social spending. A case of unadulterated greed and selfishness. John Kenneth Galbraith has a great quote on this ilk:

The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy -- that is the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.

The crisis in state finances is being gleefully regarded by the likes of Norquist, whose insane positions are hinted at here:

Norquist is a man who would love to destroy the very system that created the middle class in America and propelled this nation to prosperity. His vision of an ideal future for America is one similar to the corrupt oligarchies that are so legendary in Latin America.

Re: Is the problem just emerging or has it been around before?

What is new is that the U.S. has never been the victim of a fascist judicial coup d'etat before. We are in uncharted waters, and those who are purportedly in charge may suffer the fate of those who intend to achieve results and instead end up with consequences. No one knows what the result of tearing asunder the social fabric of the country will be. However, only an evangelical idiot can imagine the results are going to be positive. Even the evangelical Christians who are leading this insane charge expect the worst. They hope to lead this country and the world into Armageddon. Not exactly an enlighted plan, IMO.

John Le Carre has written recently that America is currently in one of its occasional bouts of madness.

I see this as the worst ever. I agree with Helen Thomas, the octogenarian White House reporter who calls the Boy King the absolute worst President this nation has ever been forced to endure.

We live in a nation that has been taken over by a heartless, selfish criminal conspiracy. They've proven they cannot be trusted with the nation's pension system. The world rightly fears that they are in charge of the world's largest arsenal, and have no moral or ethical standards whatsoever.
