Tom has filed for a trademark on eConnect. His attorney does not anticipate any problem, the name was available according to the trademark database.

eConnect/BETT would like to have econnect.com as a web address, if possible. However, it appears that the company mentioned in the article you found, has used econnect.com as their web address for some time. They have been asked if they would like to sell the web address. Not sure what the result will be. If they won't sell, Tom will just come up with a different clever web address.

You can own a web address, without having any trademark rights to the name. This is one of the more amusing results of our society's rapid head-first plunge into the new electronic world. Some very large companies have found themselves in the position of not owning web sites that sound like them.
