I agree that compression will work equally on any raw stream; I just wasn't following why you earlier brought compression up in explaining how the new 56kbit speed is possible

My understanding is that the new modems are designed to provide a *raw* 56kbit stream on a clean line, (112kbits with 2:1 compression). Did I miss something from the Rockwell whitepaper?

All your points on sources of noise are still valid, and would impact whether 56kbit is achievable.
