Hello Matt,

I just posted this on the Beginners Board and thought you might be able to help...

Hello Sharbel,

Parabolic SAR is a very good Indicator BUT I wouldn't use it as my Primary... SAR is good for either setting stops OR confirmation of a buy. The object is to always have Price above Parabolic SAR..... You are right that an Optimized Parabolic SAR is one of the better Indicators there are BUT you can not use it in a scan..... You have to optimize it for each and every chart you are looking at.... GET has that feature and I use it on every chart I look at AS CONFIRMATION..

WARNING... In GET you MUST optimize Parabolic SAR EVERY NIGHT. Yes, it is like the Wave Counts in that it changes after the fact........ Put up NZYM and Optimize Parabolic SAR. It gives you a sell around 1/8/96 which is right in line with MACD (8-17-9). The problem is I KNOW that this WAS NOT the story way back then.... Put up Training Mode and jump back to 1/20/96 and look at MACD (8-17-9). It just turned long the day before and StochRSI (14) was giving a buy... Of course the Optimized Parabolic SAR would have kept you out of the trade which in hindsight was a very good move.. BUT WOULD IT REALLY???? Go into Parabolic one more time and Optimize again.... Click on OK and see what you get.... Surprise, surprise.... NOW it's a screaming buy and your last line of defense is telling you this is a GOOD trade.....

I'm sure there are other examples BUT I felt that this one HAD to be talked about. Jerry (Big Dog) Gatto and I were talking about NZYM back on 1/20/96 and Optimized Parabolic SAR was one of the Indicators we were looking at... The Big Dog called it right when he said "I don't care what Parabolic SAR has to say, I DON'T LIKE THIS ONE!!!"

When you back test and system test please do not take the results as Gospel... They are giving you an IDEA of what COULD HAVE happened so you can approximate your future moves... You WILL NOT sell when the system says to sell, and you MAY NOT BUY when the system tells you to buy. You MAY NOT get the same buy price as the system test and you MAY NOT get the same sell price as the system test..... They are important but THEY ARE NOT THE LAW!
