Slider. All in all? We're completely unprepared to fight this war.
It's incredible how many supposedly educated and intelligent people - both in and out of government - don't seem to "get it", yet. Many still think our problem is just a few thousand wild eyed fanatics running around in caves, or in terror cells in the US and other nations.
Truth is millions of Moslems want to destroy us. Guarantee Pakistan and it's nuclear arsenal will be the next to fall to the extreme fundamentalists. FWIW, methinks nuclear will be used in this war. Hopefully, they won't be used on us first.
But what I find most worrisome, right now, is the lack of will to make and implement some of the important and obvious decisions necessary to protect the country. As you pointed out, on any given day, dozens of terrorist cells can simply stroll across either border. Yet our government still seems incapable of dealing with the issue.
Instead, a few dozen envelops with anthrax spores dominates public attention and according to reports has a large part of our police and emergency units on what is, for the most part, a coast to coast wild goose chase. For heaven sakes, anthrax is a deadly disease. BUT the media IMO has gone off the deep end with overkill on this story to the extent that they are promoting the very hysteria the terrorists want to foster. These letters don't contain enough anthrax spores to kill as many nationwide as there were traffic deaths in Ohio last weekend!! We need a free press but we also need to see a better sense of proportion in how the news is presented vs what IMHO is little short of fear mongering.
And, predictably this kind of coverage will only furthert divert national attention away from where the real threat lies: The wide open access terrorists STILL have to our nation, via the borders.
There's no question that the military should have taken over both borders a long long time ago. It would certainly have made a huge difference in the war on drugs over the past 15-20 years. But, whenever anyone would bring up the idea during that period? They were dismissed as right wing or extreme.
And...what happened?!. We've continued to lose the war on drugs.
Now we're talking about the whole American franchise being at risk because we're not willing to bite the political and diplomatic bullet and JUST DO IT. Bill O'Reilly has been calling for putting the military on the borders for a month. In all the interviews I've seen of gov officials and members of congress, the principal reason given is that it will offend our neighbors. In other words, it's not politically correct.
Unbelieveble !! We may be the first nation in history to literally kill ourselves with kindness !!!
