BN Israeli Involvement Suspected in PairGain Hoax, Newspaper Says
Apr 11 1999 0:23

Tel Aviv, April 11 (Bloomberg) -- Israeli police are likely
to join U.S. investigators tracking a faked Bloomberg News story
posted on the Internet that boosted PairGain Technologies Inc.
shares, Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronot reported, without
naming sources. Investigators suspect Israelis may be involved
in part because the story described a nonexistent take over bid
for PairGain by ECI Telecom Ltd., an Israeli telecommunications
equipment maker, and the story was posted during a Jewish
holiday, when ECI's offices were closed, which helped hide the
fact the story wasn't true, the newspaper said. The hoax sent
PairGain shares soaring as much as 32 percent before the story
was denied by both companies.
In March Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported ECI was in
talks to purchase on of three U.S. companies, Advanced Fibre
Communication Inc., ADTRAN Inc., or PairGain.
