Since I didn't prepare the chart below, I can't vouch for its accuracy. But the ratios seem correct to me.

If we look at the most recent price on the chart, something like $2.10 per gallon, this is obviously not Los Angeles where the price is more like $3.25. But comparing a city where gasoline today would be $2.10, a price of $1.50 in 1990 sounds about right.

When I see a chart I like I store a copy of it. Too bad I didn't write on this chart where it came from.
