<TOKYO, June 15 (Reuters) - Japan's largest mobile operator, NTT DoCoMo Inc <9437.T>, said on Friday it plans to replace 1,400 third-generation (3G) mobile handsets made by NEC Corp <6701.T> to upgrade them.

"We are replacing handsets to improve their function, not because of technical problems," said Takumi Suzuki, a DoCoMo spokesman.

DoCoMo, which began introductory 3G services on May 30, did not say when the handsets would be replaced.

DoCoMo said it plans to replace 1,400 FOMA N2001 model handsets, which are manufactured by NEC Corp <6701.T>.

Hahaahaahahahaaaahhhahaa! Well, they can claim to have introduced service in May 2001 as promised. What a joke. What a fake. How dishonest. They knew it was no good but went ahead anyway. I guess somebody would have had to fall on their sword if the system hadn't been started in May as promised.

Of course the media won't notice anything amiss in the VW40 world. It won't occur to them that 1xRTT cdma2000 is already up and running in Korea as the only functional 3G standard, in commercial operation; soon to be commercial in USA, Kiwiland, Australia and elsewhere. Japan too! Look out NTT!

Chris Gent must be wondering what the heck to do as his 3G spectrum sits rotting. He couldn't sell a simple thing like Globalstar, so I can't see how he can get 3G humming, especially without any technology that works and when it does work, it'll be expensive.
