Skeeter,

Scientifically speaking, Dr. Simon was *not* correct. Occam's Razor is more than sufficient in this case.

I'm tempted to use stronger language, but that would expose me to being sued for defamation. Assuming of course there's anything to defame in this case....

I used to spend more time than I care to remember advising on how to use statistics in medical studies in a university setting. I gave it up when I got tired of giving people brand new fecal orifices because they tried to use statistics when it was neither called for nor possible.

I'll remember the name and in the future I'll discount the value of his vote to zero.

What ought to be important is demonstrated benefit to a reasonable portion of the patient population coupled with manageable side effects. Period. Demonstrate that and get on with the real job of treating people. Hopefully it will be possible to improve and extend the lives of a reasonable number of people long enough to develop better alternatives. That's really all I care about.

Today I spent several hours talking to someone whose wife had breast cancer. Three operations in a few months and now she's being dragged through chemotherapy that works in a few percent of the patients and makes whatever life the remainder has left miserable. Give these people some choices and some hope. If it were my wife, I'd settle for a five years of quality life followed by a quick death instead of ten years of misery.

Thanks, Torben
