Bev,
Yes, there is some acrhitecture of interest. For me,though,it is the contrasts! No where else on earth will someone find in 16 miles a change from deserts through orchards to aspen forests.
Start Your trip in Alamogordo and see the White Sands National Monument. North of town the desert has been urged into bloom, with
nut trees.New Mexico's Green Chili based Mexican food abounds in many local haunts, but most types of fare are available.
Heading East on US 82(from north edge of town)you pass through a tunnel into what seems a different world. The Colors change from the tan earth tones of the desert to the green of apple & cherry orchards as you proceed through High Rolls. Everyone should should also see these colors change each fall.
The "summit" of your trip will be Cloudcroft - A historic sleepy vacation/retirement village. Aspens & cool clean air fill the soul.

A few hours drive away; one can tour Lincoln. This is the (restored but not ruined) site of the Lincoln County War - which gave us 'Billy-the-Kid' & Pat Garrett. One can "feel" the history, while the learn the truth.

Other day trips are easily found. My wife & I have loved it for years.
Your Turn
Richard
ps Roswell is one of these day trips...
