N.Y. Times Co. July advertising revenues decline 3.3%

By David B. Wilkerson Aug 15, 2006

marketwatch.com

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- New York Times Co. said Tuesday that advertising revenue dropped 3.3% in July compared with the same month a year ago, hurt by weakness in such categories as movies, national automotive and corporate. Advertising continued to be dismal at the company's New England Media Group, which includes the Boston Globe and the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, as revenue plunged nearly 12%. The consolidation of the region's two largest department stores has severely depressed ad sales. On the upside, New York Times Co.'s online properties posted ad gains of more than 30% in July, paced by solid growth at NYTimes.com and About.com. About.com ad revenue climbed 34.4%. Circulation revenue was about flat with last year.
