i'm making progress, L1, thanks.

like seger's shakey davey, i must have got some bad merchandise.

the symantec knowledge base had just what i was looking for in terms of specific steps to take to remedy this critical error message.

i just got the manual scans to run all the way through (they were stopping at varying points) by deselecting "Scan within compressed files". that gave me joy.

now i can conclude that i have one or more damaged compressed file, such as a .zip file. i see that i can leave this option unchecked and will not compromise security, or i can run Disk Doctor and see if i can repair the damaged files.

one thing about having two computers going all the time... now and then one may help you out of a jam that the other has gotten into, but there comes a time when they both suffer the same set of problems... usually attributable to having loaded the identical software (bad merchandise?) on each machine. i'm looking at various updates i've retrieved in the past day or two and wondering if they might be the source of the damaged compressed file.

sounds like you're having more fun than humans should be allowed to have, just like me!

:)
