Imagine like the snow we just got.. slick on asphalt.. where the asphalt is hard pan.. THAT is the absorption issue.. It also tends to plant weeds.. or bring up dormant ones.. Lots of large scale agricultural practices simply do not translate to garden plots.. Experience talking... that is why I mentioned the economies of scale to shootist

but tilled well and augmented with lots of compost (I also add sand as required) as a startup project it is fine...
