How did anyone live past, say, 60 or 65, BEFORE SS? You think no one did?

Few did. The average American life span when SS started was in the 50's; now it's in the 70's and rising.


That's a bit misleading. Childhood diseases were much more prevalent back then, and also accidents since we didn't have a government mandating all sorts of safety things -- for example, I bicycled around all my youth including bike trips in the summer and a bike tour around England and never even know such a thing as a bicycle helmet existed. Not to mention the loss of young men in wars. All those tended to lower the average age.

Once a person got to the age of 50, they were generally pretty healthy, and often lived to ripe old ages.
