There is nickel in some iron ores, also cobalt ... also lots of iron in some nickel ores, Sudbury for example - en.wikipedia.org

Pig iron is just the raw stuff out of the furnace, could have anything in it, probably if you had more nickel 'impurity' than your intended steel needed, it would pay to take it out ... there are really big fat books on steel-making and alloying, the variations are infinite, new ones being tried all the time
