BELL ATLANTIC NAMES TELLABS SOLE SELECTED SUPPLIER OF SONET WIDEBAND DIGITAL CROSS-CONNECT SYSTEMS

Lisle, Ill. - Tellabs announced today that it will supply its SONET-based TITANr 5500 digital cross-connect systems to Bell Atlantic under the terms of a new, five-year agreement under which Tellabs was selected as the sole supplier of wideband digital cross-connects to Bell Atlantic.

Bell Atlantic telephone companies provide advanced voice and data wireline services in 13 eastern states and the District of Columbia. This newest agreement between Tellabs and Bell Atlantic is part of a region-wide network upgrade that will extend Tellabs' presence into New York and New England.

"We are very pleased to expand our long-time relationship with Bell Atlantic," said Robert Pullen, vice president of development and marketing for the Tellabs Digital Systems Division. "By carrying various traffic types -- private line, voice, frame relay, ATM, data and Internet -- over a single high-availability, self-healing SONET network, Bell Atlantic will be well-positioned to satisfy the demands of its customers."

The Tellabs equipment will be used to provide SONET transport between Bell Atlantic's inter-office network and its local-access network. The Tellabs equipment will be used at distribution hubs where high-speed traffic from the access network (and other hub locations) is groomed onto fiber optic rings.

"Tellabs showed a comprehensive understanding of our business needs and deployment philosophy," said Paul Lacouture, Chief Technology and Engineering Officer, Bell Atlantic. "Interoperability with other network elements and management systems were two of the reasons why we chose Tellabs' digital cross-connects."

The TITAN family of digital cross-connects is recognized industry-wide for enabling instant provisioning, "self-healing" capabilities and high reliability. These sophisticated network elements allow service providers to offer new services while reducing operating costs. TITAN systems are deployed in virtually all types of telecommunications networks, including local telephone service, long-distance, wireless and private networks, as well as in emerging corporate networks.

Tellabs designs, manufactures, markets and services voice and data transport and network access systems. The company's products are used worldwide by the providers of communications services. Tellabs, Inc., stock is listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market (TLAB).

Tellabs and the Tellabs logo are registered U.S. trademarks of Tellabs Operations, Inc. in the United States and/or in other countries.
