Mike, <<<Why? If you replaced every processor in a series 390 computer with an x-86 processor, it would have a very small impact on AMD's or Intel's revenue. Why should either company care about this, let alone make it a priority?>>>
I didn't mean to imply that they could replace an IBM series 390 computer with a current Xeon or Athlon Server, one on one, but I think you knew that. Perhaps, today, you could replace some of those low end $25K per IBM AS400's with high end Xeon and future Athlon servers. I don't know exactly what IBM revenues are from their AS400 line of computer, but I think the number is huge.
Again, I don't have the numbers at hand, but I think IBM mainframe sales are greater than total AMD revenues. But I also wrote that Intel/AMD are/should be going after the RISC computer market that is now shared by SUNW, IBM, HWP, CPQ and at least half a dozen other players. Again, I don't have the numbers, but those numbers are very big.
<<<You also wrote "IA can significantly cut hardware costs for companies using information technology to be globally competitive."
Do you mean IA-64? Assuming you do, how?>>>
I can't imagine that you could replace a $10M IBM System 390 with a 2 way Athlon server or even anything in the Xeon family. I imagine it would have to be something in IA64 family costing several million dollars.
I'm only speculating. As if you didn't already know.
