Extra snipit on cable boxes

U.S. consumers will be able to walk into neighborhood electronics stores and buy their own cable boxes starting in about two years under rules adopted on Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission. Analysts expect that instead of paying the local cable company two or three dollars a month to lease set-top control boxes, many consumers will choose to purchase boxes directly or even buy televisions or VCRs with the devices built in. Under the FCC rules, set-top boxes will need a separate plug-in security component provided by the local cable operator to function properly. Cable operators must make new boxes with plug-in security available by July 1, 2000. The sale or leasing of older all-in-one boxes will be prohibited after Jan.1, 2005.
