Cellular Operators Blast TRAI, Accuse it of Being Biased

Cellular operators again got together and slammed TRAI against what they called its discriminatory behavior of allowing basis operators to offer cheap limited mobility services without paying any extra license fee. They felt that TRAI has been unfair in its treatment of interconnection issue, which has resulted in cellular tariffs being higher than limited mobile phone services.

Operators felt that TRAI has not been fair to cellular operators and has been backing WLL-M operators on the issue of interconnection. The conference comes a day after cellular operators wrote an open letter to TRAI basically asking the waiver of access charge of 1.20 being currently charged to a subscriber when a person calls a landline from a cellular phone. Asim Ghosh of Hutchison, Virat Bhatia of AT&T, Rajeev Chandrasekhar of BPL Mobile, and Anil Nayar of AirTel were present at the conference. All speakers slammed TRAI for issuing anti-competitive directives. The last directive was issued to Bharti to provide interconnection to Tata Teleservices immediately. All operators supported AirTel's stand not offer interconnect to Tata Teleservices.
