I read a lot of the comments on that NYT piece. Many see what China is doing as underhand, those Asians are cunning, you know. Of course the key factor is that because REE processing is so environmentally damaging, US industries were happy to let China do it and suffer the pollution. I didn't see anybody pointing out that since China is paying a huge environmental price to produce REEs, it is morally reasonable for them to retain the financial benefits as compensation.
