In a prior post someone mentioned G. Moore. G Moore is a leading authority on marketing HT firms and products. After understanding and coming to grips with the "Whole Product Model", your questions should be answered. Hint: Heidelberg sells COMPLETE printing solutions--a whole product. What value does Presstek technology have if you, the printer, can't deliver value to your customer? See where this is going...... Heidelberg is taking the position, and correctly so, that their customers don't need or care about the underlying technology. What they are interested in is gaining a competitive advantage, or at least staying even, by using the new Heidelberg product. New markets, new customers, more margin..... It's the benefits that Heidelberg is selling, not the underlying technology. Crossing the Chasm and Inside the Tornado should be mandatory reading for all posting on this thread. It would certainly eliminate most of the uninformed drivel on this thread, like post #3122.
