Ltd., Matsushita Research Institute in Tokyo and Matsushita Electronics Corp. have developed a single-chip MPEG-2 encoder, which requires about 20 percent less power consumption than other ICs. The chip will begin sampling in June for 20,000 Yen (U.S. $158) and will be targeted at DV camcorders, video recordable DVD players and PCs.
