ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 8, 1999--Harbinger Corporation (NASDAQ:HRBC), a worldwide supplier of Electronic Commerce software, services and solutions, announced today that Packard Bell NEC, Inc. (PBNEC), a leading supplier of PCs to home and corporate users, has selected Harbinger to outsource its electronic supply chain management solution. The solution will facilitate all of the company's business-to-business supply chain management transactions and harbinger.net(SM), Harbinger's new application-to-application E-Commerce portal, will serve as the gateway through which these transactions flow.
Packard Bell NEC manufactures computers to fulfill orders ranging from customized NT servers and PCs to bulk orders from dealers, value-added resellers and corporate accounts from one of the world's largest centralized computer manufacturing plants. All transactions are completed electronically, from purchasing components to receiving payment for shipments. Using on-network data translation services, harbinger.net enables Packard Bell NEC and its trading partners to send data to the portal in any E-Commerce format (ANSI X12, UN/EDIFACT, e-forms, etc.). It is then converted to the required data format before being routed to the intended recipient. Transmissions can be routed either over the Internet or value-added networks. Packard Bell NEC's trading partners are able to track the messages and view the data on harbinger.net.
"Quality, durability, and affordability have made PBNEC a long-time leader in the PC industry, and market leadership requires us to continuously re-evaluate all processes that support our success," said Don Liedtke, Chief Information Officer of Packard Bell NEC. "We chose Harbinger as our partner because their state-of-the-art solution enables us to utilize low-cost WebEDI technologies while leveraging our existing investments in E-Commerce. By using Harbinger's services to 'fast-track' the implementation, growth, and management of our E-Commerce infrastructure for supply chain management, we can focus on our core competencies and streamline our business processes, improve time-to-market, exceed customer expectations and generate higher profits."
"Harbinger is very pleased to have been chosen by Packard Bell NEC to achieve their strategic vision for electronic supply chain management as a core enabler of their business processes," said James M. Travers, Harbinger President and Chief Operating Officer. "We see their decision to outsource their program as the logical way to gain the highest benefits at the lowest sustainable cost. Using the proven 'service bureau' model running on harbinger.net, we will assume total responsibility for their E-Commerce operations under a service agreement that dedicates resources and commits to measurable program goals. Harbinger is actively involved in the development and deployment of industry-wide electronic business interoperability standards. This model aligns with our vision and core strategy for the evolution of E-Commerce technology and the E-Commerce market."
