Cody,

Since Marshall pretty well covered the cheesiness of the options program when it's accompanied by selling off shares, I will add that it doesn't demonstrate very much long-term loyalty to the company, which is ostensibly the rationale for having the options program. What I find inspiring are the accounts of RFC employees working on the front lines and very excited about being able to accumulate some shares and grow with the company. IMO, these are the key people whose enthusiasm and loyalty will help make going to RFC's a positive experience for customers and the ones more deserving of an options program. The share-dumping insiders are part of the proof that RAIN has a success formula that will survive just about anything.

As for the idea that they hadn't taken much compensation before, I'd say Berman really made up for it with this load of options, which is simply the prelude to loading up again in the next round. Marshall is right that the net impact is probably not a big deal. It's just distasteful, which is a bad indicator for a restaurant. I would prefer predominantly cash salaries because they are clearer and harder to camouflage. What you see is what they get. :-)
