Telecom operators to pay for using other networks

NEW DELHI: In its effort to provide a level playing field to cellular operators vis-a-vis other service providers like basic and WLL based limited mobile service providers, telecom regulator Trai has made each operator to pay for using other's network.

In the new tariff regime, the WLL mobile and cellular operators would be paying Rs 0.30 per minute for making an outgoing call in the metros.

While between fixed line and cellular operators, the former would be paying Rs 0.30 for using the latter's network and the cellular operators would be paying Rs 0.50 for using former's network, Trai chairman MS Verma said.

Trai has also announced similar network usage charge between fixed line and WLL mobile operators. In this category fixed line operator would be making a payment of Rs 0.30 for using WLL network while the other would be paying Rs 0.50 for using fixed line network.

All these costs would be in-built in the tariffs announced by the TRAI and would not be levied over and above the announced tariffs except in cases where Trai has given a free hand to operators to determine tariffs in view of market competition.
