"and then"

That is the part that I can't wrap my head around. I probably never will.

You are right in that the theory needs some extensions (hence superstring theory, etc.). However quantum mechanics has always been twisted beyond recognition <g>. That is why it has taken most of a century to recognize and test some of its implications. Tunneling is an example. Tunneling is a direct implication of field theory; it does not "twist" or contradict accepted "conventional" theory.

All those alternative theories (superstring, etc.) were created to bring gravity under the same theory as QM (which unites the other forces). As I understand it, they were not needed to explain phenomena observed in the laboratory that don't mesh with "ordinary" quantum mechanics -- Until recently, at least.
