U.S. TRADING SUMMARY: U.S. stocks pushed higher near midday Tuesday in nervous trading, but Wall Street was expecting more volatility as it searched for the direction of the market. At 1:20 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 163 points at 7702. Earlier, the Dow had swung down to the 7,400 level, but it soon bounced back to gain as much as 227 points on heavy volume that swelled to about 790 million shares traded on the Big Board. Other key indices swung throughout the morning, but were also higher at midday. The Nasdaq Composite index had gained 38 points to 1538 and the S&P 500 index was up 21 points at 979. Bellwether technology stocks, which have been beaten down in the global sell-off, recovered some of their losses at midday, helping to drive the Nasdaq higher. |
