Here in the Pacific Northwest, an old growth forest will have a mix of trees, mainly fir and cedar, of various ages. A forest growing over a clearcut will have all fir trees of the same age. The old growth forest is more biologically diverse. The clear cut forest will be harvested at a much younger age when the trees are much smaller - again less biologically diverse. I am not so offended by 100 year old stumps as recent stumps of 300 and 500 year old trees. There are so few of them left.
