lml, there are times when anonymity would be desired (for some this would always be the case), and times when you might want to be announced. ICQ's on-off capabilities speak to this in a related way, but not directly per the situation you cite.

I'd consider your allusion to the download scenario as an active one, one in which you might prefer to have the prerogative of leaving your ID (IP address) or not. This is in contrast to a more passive state of announcement - when your IP or caller ID is constantly announcing itself - e.g., when you might want to be reachable for voice over Internet calls in the future. In the not too distant future you might want to be anonymous for downloading purposes, and still be "present" on the 'net for other applications, in other words.

All of the above fall under a major heading of considerations having to do with people habits and preferences, when sorting out behavioral traits in order to profile VoIP and other personalized real time applications, going forward.

Thus far, where VoIP has only mimicked the PSTN, these considerations have been only latent ones. With true Internet telephony and video apps of the future, these issues will come to the fore and require service providers to address them more intently. Frank_C.
