Tunica asks: PS Can you get in the web a write up of the side effects of phentolamine and post them for this thread to look at?

From POL-Net (Physicians Online) here are side effects:

"Acute and prolonged hypotensive episodes, sinus tachycardia, and/or angina have all occurred with parenteral administration of phentolamine. These effects may be due to the drug's
cardiac-stimulating and vasodilatory effects. Other adverse effects seen with phentolamine therapy include weakness, dizziness, flushing, ejaculation dysfunction, and orthostatic hypotension. Flushing may be due to dilation of the facial blood vessels.

Nasal congestion is probably caused by phentolamine's vasodilatory effect on blood vessels in the nasal mucosa.

Nausea/vomiting and other GI effects are common. Diarrhea secondary to phentolamine may result from stimulation of GI smooth muscle, which can be blocked by atropine.

Priapism has occasionally been reported after intracavernosal injection of phentolamine into the penis. Penile ecchymosis is a common adverse effect of this treatment, as is transient pain."

Phentolamine is heavy-duty stuff, been around forty years Since Back When and I saw it then used IV to drop the blood pressure when all seemed lost in thoracic aortic dissection and also in a case of eclampsia of pregnancy. Suggestion: Don't mess with it, even though the definition of "when all seems lost" has changed with the times.
