Check out when they drill in Michigan and move the rigs from location to location.
It most assuredly is too damn cold for this warm weather boy.

They use water mix with a special "mud" mixture for a few purposes; lubricating the bit, to bring up the cuttings for observation (samples are collected at a set interval something like 10' from the shakers for geologist to study and show finds) and most importantly; to keep whatever high pressure gas and oil down the hole. Wells in the modern era do not gush out of the ground and is to prevent blowouts.

You have rigs that are setup for extreme cold weather; as they drill in places like Canada and Alaska. Last I heard, pretty cold places. They turn it to the right 365 days a year.
