I've been on the fence about the viability of touch screens for Macs, for desktops especially. I know I wouldn't want to pick my arm up to a large monitor all day, or even most of the time. I still use a mouse on my iMac. Many young people used to a MacBook have switched over to use an external Magic Trackpad. as their pointing device in lieu a mouse.

Makes far more sense on a laptop to have a touch screen to me, though I'm not sure it would be a big enough sales driver to justify the expense of that change. In cases like that I think Apple runs the numbers and gauges interest to see if all the engineering required to give touch screen interfaces would be worth it.

Maybe not though, and they're just guessing no one wants them. I never cease to be amazed at corporate executive stupidity in all big high tech companies. :-)

Here's the kicker for me with Apple's latest laptop designs, the MacBooks of all shapes, names and sizes. Apple has made the trackpad so large on their laptops I've often hit it by accident wit a stray finger or knuckle when typing on the keyboard. often triggering odd behavior. Many relatives have done the same, so....

...Every new Apple laptop I get to set up for someone, I turn off ALL of the trackpad gestures in settings, except for right click. I'll let people add whatever gestures they think they'll use. Most never turn any on.
