lisa, try this clickstream...

start, settings, control panel, system, device manager.

view the dropdown menu in device manager. you'll see the mouse entry. look for a yellow exclamation mark on top of where it says mouse. the exclamation point denotes a device conflict. with the problems you've been describing, you should see a yellow exclamation mark.

then, regardless of whether there is an exclamation mark or not, left click the "+" to the left of the mouse icon. a new item will appear that further describes your mouse. highlight (click) that item, then click properties. on the general tab there's a device status window that says if the mouse is working properly. clicking the resources tab also has a conflicting device list.

click cancel to back all the way out of these windows when done.
