Wireless net access is of course a good thing, but the initial configuration to hook the PDA to a cell phone via a cable is clumsy at best. What if a sales rep wants to talk with a customer and access the net at the same time? Need 2 phones?

This announcement would have much more impact if the wireless modems were available simultaneously, but it seems there is much more engineering work left to be done. Maybe the PR should have read: "...an agreement to develop, market and sell wireless solutions for handhelds using the Palm OS(R) platform, the leading handheld operating system." Much uncertainty still exists as to how net access can be efficiently and economically implemented on top of the existing voice networks.

Ask anyone who has used a net-ready phone to attempt to accomplish any meaningful work. It is dismal at best. Now, a PDA with a Metricom modem...
