RE ArcServe

The name may change to Brightstore but the problems continue. The biggest is the usage of CA written tape drivers which limits your effective support of advanced tape devices. Most other vendors utilize MSFT tape drivers. It is hard to figure out quick resolution of problems encountered since CA will yes you to death that the products problem is not their software but your tape device and the device vendor does likewise. We had a lot of people who had it from the old Novell days and went with it for their first Windows NT solution.

Personally, the best deal for your buck is Retrospect from Dantz. Pricing is much lower then CA or Veritas products. For example for the price of Veritas or CA single server product, you can buy multi server version of Retrospect for same price. Dantz is about only backup solution for Mac's out there. So I believe they made a lot of money in past so I would tend to believe they are financially stable if not widely unknown.
I see more people going to multi server tape backup solution with 600-800 GB autoloader device before they get big enough dataset to go to SAN solution.

Maybe that is why aj calls them SAN suckers. <g>

they made a lot of money on Macintosh since it is just about only product on that platform.
