>>>"Religious "truths" are held based on faith, which is belief despite contrary evidence. "<<<

Depends on which truths you are referring to. Hope, charity, justice are all forms of truth for which we can find contrary evidence. We find examples where what appears to be charity is actually an attempt to subordinate someone in a class system. We find examples where punitive measures employed by the justice system actually fail to bring an individual to justice or to resolve the crime or reconcile society. We all know what hope is when we feel it, we know charity when we give it, and we know what we expect as justice in the world. We find in most cases circumstance is disappointing because we never see what we could determine to be perfect justice etc. But we can imagine the ideals of each principle and religion codifies those archetypes as truth. You don't have to be religious to appreciate that. Then there is the mystical region of religion where you have deities and miracles and such that have to be held on faith. That's probably what you meant.

>>>and they denigrate science, because the "facts" do change over time based on evidence and new theories. <<<

I don't know any religious people who denigrate science for those reasons. I keep meeting atheists who say religious people do that (implying all or most religious people do that).

Scientific "believers" claim scientific facts do not change over time but the fact is science is self correcting, new discoveries are constant and constantly challenge pre-existing factual basis.

>>>There should be no confusion between the two modes of thinking.<<<

Each body of believers has a background state they perceive as truth. The question should not be how we prove which one is The Truth. Is his truth true or is her truth true? The question should be how do we come to new truth, because it is this process that truly satisfies and enlightens the seeker.
