"PC Games Stuck in the Slow Lane"
As the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo, known as E3, gets under way this week in Atlanta, video games - played on a dedicated console hooked up to a standard TV - clearly reign supreme over computer games. Titles running on consoles such as the Sony PlayStation and the Nintendo 64 accounted for $3.3 billion, or about 65 percent, of the $5.1 billion worth of game software sold in this country last year, according to the Interactive Digital Software Association. And the spread between video- and computer games continues to grow rapidly.

The article points out that, right now, the video console game market is booming, while the PC game market shows relatively steady growth of about 18% a year.

The article can be taken two ways. In one sense it is bad that PC gaming is not growing more rapidly. On the other hand, PC gaming software companies might grasp at anything (like 3D-Now Technology to come up with the "next big game." Three other factors to consider:
1. 17" and 19" monitors are becoming relatively common, enhancing the entertainment capability of PC's
2. DVD, while still in infancy will do the same
3. OTOH, set top boxes with DVD/Internet/Gaming capabilities are set to take off in a big way. My guess is that less than half of these will use x86 CPU's and they will pull sales away from PC's.
