The following link is an analysis of the clone movement via MacWay.
BTW, while "shoot from the hip" remarks are easy, they contribute little. This forum is useful to me as a clearing house of information about AAPL as an investment. (There are many other forums, that I can use for tech data.) As such, I welcome "heads up" links to pertinent news items.

"Why its time to clone the Mac" - An Analysis by Pieter Hartsook <http://techweb.cmp.com/techweb/oem/docs/apple.html>
_______
Here are two paragraphs from it:
"Two years ago at Comdex/Fall, there was just one MacOS vendor: Apple. Last year, there were four others: DayStar Digital Inc., Pioneer, Power Computing and Radius Inc., which later sold its MacOS license to Taiwan's Umax. This year, there could be 10 and, by Comdex 1997, another dozen. Foreseeing the potential profits, companies such as Goldstar of South Korea, Olivetti of Italy and Vobis of Germany are already planning an entry into the Mac-clone market, and one or two major American OEMs will jump into the fray by next spring.
Why are these companies going to take a chance building Mac clones? For one thing, they're tired of giving most of their profits to Microsoft and Intel. The Mac-clone market may be a lot smaller than the PC market, but it's incremental business with less competition and higher margins. This is a business, however, not a grudge match, so let's look at some of the more substantial reasons this market could be right for a forward-thinking OEM today." |
