The mistake you are making with that example, in my not so humble opinion, is measuring the devastation as the variable with which to evaluate the value of education.

Had people in the past had those technological capabilities they would've done even more destruction.

You have to separate out civilization from technological advancement. By that I mean until a couple of hundred years ago everyone on earth accepted slavery for the most part and gender inequality and racism.

None of that is acceptable today.
