re: Office X update

All -

I just got a call from an acquaintance asking for help with the Office X update.

Apparently, he has a bootleg copy of Office X. He installed the Service Pack, then ran Word. He was presented with the "Personalize" screen asking for his name, organization and the 25-character product key. Since he doesn't have the key, I couldn't help him. Wasn't going to give him mine, and I don't know if it would have worked anyway.

I had heard that Microsoft was aware of certain copies of various software that had been widely illegally distributed, and that they were going to use Service Packs to "break" them. This appears to be such a case.

You can't blame MS for protecting their copyrights, but I do think they'd have less of a bootlegging problem if they just charged less for the software. The price of the Office suite is just too high. Then again, I suppose there are those who wouldn't even pay fifty bucks for something they could get for free.

PS: I installed the SP on my machine, and never got the "Personalize" screen. Somehow it knew I had a legit copy. The programs really are all much snappier. I look forward to improved stability all around.
