China Unicom to buy 7 million low-end (CDMA) phones for rural areas

May 9, 2005

(SinoCast via NewsEdge) China Unicom will purchase 7 million low-end
CDMA mobile phones to accommodate the demand of users in rural areas
and in some urban areas.

Insiders believe that China Unicom's move indicates the carrier is preparing
for an eventual upgrade to 3G.

Previously, China Unicom poured 10.6 billion yuan ($1.2 billion) in a network
upgrade project.
