I have used ZA for a couple of years or more. Last year I was getting a growing number of "contacts" from all over the world. I didn't know if these were hackers or not. ZA said that many organizations and individuals out there routinely send out probes over the whole internet to collect information and that these weren't necessarily hostile attempts.

I then got DSL and in order to solve a problem I was having with keeping a stable connection, I added a router. This router has NAT. I continued to run ZA, but I was delighted to see that the number of contacts that got through the router dropped to about a half dozen per month and all of these were ping requests from my isp or other trusted sites. In other words, essentially nothing got through my router.

One thing that ZA does that the router would not do is prevent outbound contacts from my computer that I didn't authorize. This would be a factor if somehow a trojan or other hack somehow got onto my machine. With my router in place I have no concerns about such happening, but having ZA there is helpful IMO. The free version is completely adequate and I can't see any downside to using ZA, so I'd suggest using it even if you have NAT.
