Siskel and Ebert vs The Academy:

I saw "Do the Right Thing" in the theater. I've probably seen it 10-times since. I love that film, even though it seems a bit preachy and sanitized these days. Love the characters and the iconic performances. The opening credits were worth the price of admission!

"Hoop Dreams" was an incredibly moving film that captured the mood at the time perfectly. That it was shut out of the Academy Awards is tragic, but I rented it when it became available and was profoundly moved by it.

"Roger and Me" was must-see documentary, and I really appreciated Michael Moore's pursuit for answers to his questions. He seemed driven and relentless. He reached his apex in "Bowling for Columbine."

Art should make you think. Art can be disturbing. There's nothing wrong with that. Art can take us to places we may not have conceived of. Art can introduce new frontiers and new paradigms. Art should be embraced, appreciated, and challenging.
