Talk about a tight schedule! Can we now consider a vote before Christmas unlikely?

Votes in dead of night and early morning

If the Senate has any hope of passing the health care bill before Christmas, lawmakers will need to cast votes in the dead of night and early in the morning next week.

The Senate would essentially stay in session 24 hours a day next week to burn the clock on procedural rules that require a 30-hour break between votes.

Here's how it would look, according to Senate leadership aides:

Following passage of the Defense Department appropriations bill Saturday morning at 7, Reid would file cloture on three things: the manager¹s amendment, the substitute amendment and the underlying bill. This would set up the first cloture vote on the manager¹s amendment on Monday at 1 a.m.

The 30-hour clock would begin to run, setting up the second cloture vote on the substitute amendment at Tuesday at 7 a.m.

The cloture vote on the underlying bill would follow on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

The vote on the final bill would take place 30 hours later -- at 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
