Wingers are now calling for Trump to dump Sessions. And of course Rosenstein. And find someone who will dump Mueller to stop the investigation. Because they already know that the investigation under Mueller is a big fix to get Trump and stop him from ... draining the swamp? A number of decades ago, Isaiah Berlin wrote a wonderful essay called The Hedgehog and the Fox. In it, he postulated two ideal types of philosophical orientations toward the world: the fox who accepts truth as multifaceted with many possible perspectives and the hedgehog who is determined to create his world around one big truth. Wingers are serial hedgehogs. They find a thing that they want to be true, that they can align their own life with, and then they interpret every new fact in such a way that the fact becomes magically consistent with that truth. And if something happens to disprove that interpretation, they find a way rationalize so that their Big Truth remains true. Their Really Big Truth is the supremacy of the US in the modern world and indeed in all history, and the Anglo-Saxon culture that they think has always existed here, even though the reality is that the culture that they think is supreme never really existed in the form they believe, as their beliefs were mostly mostly formed by myths on TV and a few slanted history books. But everything that contradicts that Really Big Truth threatens their world view and is an irritant. For some reason, Trump has become a symbol of their Really Big Truth. I have no idea why they think that this corpulent, somewhat demented and senile narcissist will "save" America as they believe it ideally was or could be, but they apparently do. And everyone who is tries to "take him down" is an enemy of their truth and must be gotten rid of. Very weird stuff.
