This is emotional rhetoric. The Cuban community didn't "nurse the child back to health"-- the family took in one of their own. And had they not, a foster family would have done the same thing- (maybe even a WASPY one)
We all respond to a child in need.

DO you have facts to back up this allegation that the father "deserted" him? He knew the child was safe with family members and he assumed that he would get Elian back. The first phone conversation allegedly reports him as saying this to ELian.
Also -- I would assume that the very regime you rail against might be pressuring him in ways we can only guess at. I have no doubt that Castro recognized a great political opportunity.

I read an interesting article today about several different cases involving children removed from America by parents of other nationalities. One in particular was upsetting--- a German mother took her two children back to Germany, placed them with the authorities and disappeared. The father (American) has been unable to get them back; Germany refused to take them from their foster family. This began in the early 90s.

I wonder what their reasons are. I don't know. The article didn't say. But wouldn't you believe that this American father has the right to his children? And if you believe that, doesn't Juan? Political righteousness is in the eye of the beholder.
