Are they popup ads or messages from Messenger ?

If messages, do the following:

Start
Control Panel
Administrative Tools
Services
right click Messenger
Properties
If running, click STOP, APPLY, OK
Repeat above
Under properties, check Messenger startup status
If automatic, change to manual
click APPLY, OK
