There could be several reasons. It could be malware or spyware trying to call home to papa. Is your friend running AdAware or Spybot like they should? Messenger uses windows explorer to access the internet so that could also be it. It could be a trojan program disguising itself as explorer. Try downloading and installing a trial version of BOClean or Trojan Hunter. Under certain circumstances explorer and iexplore both access the internet (such as accessing online help) and need to be given ZA access so I guess the easiest way to test whether it is needed or not would be to disallow access for explorer and see if something doesn't work.
