What is wrong with a dumb terminal? Do you consider NCD a dumb terminal? They are widely used within Oracle.
Why is return to dumb terminal not a step forward? Its simplicity and capability to perform the same task as a complex PC can is a big step forward. Amidst this big hoopla about how much money Oracle is going to make on NC, what really makes NC work is lost. It is the network speed, the ever increasing network speed that will really make NC work.
Also remember Oracle will not make NC and they made that clear long time ago saying that Oracle is database company and will not make any hardware. What Oracle benefits from NC is this whole new paradigm: power server running big database with thousands of NC connected to it. It will keep MSFT out of things and nullify its OS advantage. That by itself is a big plus for Oracle even if Oracle makes zip on NC sales. The reason: without MSFT, no one else has a realistic chance of catching up with Oracle. One day Oracle will be just as dominating as MSFT.

Can you find anything other than Wintel on this market right now? Also do not think everyone thinks like you do, not everyone needs intensive computing power. I read from somewhere that 90% of computer use is for some sort of word processing. Do all the people out there need a 100" monitor, 200 Mbyte of memory, pentium 500000Hz CPU, and Windows 2095 operating system to perform simple word processing task?
It is a lot easier for me to envision a future of NCs connecting to power central servers than a bunch of standalone PCs scattered everywhere.
just MHO.
