The 20 subjects were NOT all randomly chosen, it was a retrospective genetic analysis comparing future multiple sclerosis patients (the study looked at genetic signature of subjects who were all healthy at the time their blood was taken) and age matched controls who remain healthy. The findings of this study are not related to the previously noted twin sequencing study that didn't find a genetic clue to MS. As a geneticist, my point of view is that everything is in the genome. Negative results usually mean we are still missing something big there. Many levels of control and many type of cells to look at but also environmental causes such as viruses are likely.
